The Penn State University College of Engineering Research & Teaching Space Building (West 2) embodies engineering excellence and innovation. Spanning four stories and 105,000 GSF, it houses programs such as Makerspace, Machine Shops, Classrooms, Design Labs, Offices, and High Bay Engineering Shops.
The transformative lighting concept employs a "lantern effect" to infuse the building with a captivating glow. Strategically placed fixtures illuminate the facade, creating a harmonious interplay of light and architecture. The staccato placement of luminaires enhances this visual composition.
In the basement, the lighting scheme ensures visually pleasing contrast ratios between daylight and non-daylight areas. On Level 4, the ceiling tilts toward a sawtooth skylight, with recessed linear lights mimicking daylight during evening hours.
Tracking LEED Gold, the design includes responsive controls, daylight harvesting technology, and timeclock-triggered presets, ensuring energy efficiency and flexibility. This advanced lighting supports educational and research objectives while enhancing aesthetics and functionality.
