The University of Connecticut’s Science 1 Research Center is a three-story, 198,000 sq. ft. academic research building dedicated to material science and engineering. As the hub for STEM programs, it features state-of-the-art labs, offices, and a large active learning space illuminated by energy-efficient LED luminaires with smart controls, fostering innovation and sustainability.
The facade lighting design highlights major department blocks with concealed luminaires, creating an illusion of light spilling out and showcasing the building's unique design. This approach minimizes Dark Sky effects and allows precise lighting adjustments based on occupancy and natural light.
The lighting strategy extends to public spaces and pathways, with daylight provided by skylights and nighttime illumination by integrated baffle ceiling lights and pendants. The project emphasizes environmental responsibility, aligning with UConn’s commitment to sustainability. The design team has successfully fused innovation, creativity, and sustainability, making a significant impact on the campus.
